Halloween Front Yard Ideas

If there’s one place to go all out with Halloween decorations, it’s in your front yard. Trick or treaters, Halloween party guests, neighbors and passers by will all get a kick out of a well decorated front yard Halloween scene.

But how do you go about creating a fun vibe on your front lawn for Halloween?

In this article, I’m sharing some of the best ideas I’ve seen for Halloween front yard decorations.

Keep scrolling for inspiration on how to decorate your front yard for Halloween this year!

Cemetery & Graveyard For Halloween Front Yard

A front yard cemetery or graveyard scene is a popular choice for outdoor Halloween decorations. These can be pretty easy and cheap to setup too.

All you need are some faux tombstones, a fence and some creative lighting. Setup the grave markers here and there throughout the yard as you would find in a real cemetery.

You can make your own Halloween tombstones using foam board and paint. Or look for pre-made versions readily available on the market.

Enclose them in a fenced in area or skip the fence for a more simple Halloween front yard display. A few more touches like ground breaker props, skeleton figurines and spooky lighting will help give your front yard Halloween cemetery a frightful vibe, especially at night.

Coffins, Hearses in a Halloween Front Yard

Along the lines of cemeteries, consider using coffins and hearses for Halloween front yard ideas. These props look really cool with a bunch of posable skeletons alongside the hearse or popping out of a coffin.

Mummies, zombies and vampires also work well for Halloween coffin decorations. If you can find a way to make something jump out of the hearse or coffin, you’ll be sure to give visitors a fright!

Witches for Halloween Front Yards

Witches are another fun way to decorate your front yard for Halloween. An animatronic witch prop sitting over a cauldron of something brewing is relatively easy to put together and looks great at night with some green lighting.

You can also do witches with broomsticks, “flying” around the yard or hanging from the front porch. A little bit of wind or a fog machine can really make a witch seem creepy and lifelike.

Do be afraid to go for a truly ugly looking witch prop. The more haggard looking, the scarier your witch will seem!

Yard Signs in a Halloween Front Yard

If you’re not into all of the classic Halloween yard props such as life sized monster animatronics coupled with lighting effects and fog machines, consider still decorating for Halloween, but with something simpler.

One way to do this is to use Halloween yard signs for a Halloween front yard display. These can be fun to make yourself using wood, cardboard or foam board and paint.

Or consider purchasing premade signs. I like to keep an eye out for metal signs as they tend to withstand some of the rainier fall weather. Pair your yard signs with pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns and other fun props for a simple & cute Halloween front lawn.

Halloween Front Yard Ideas With Skeletons

Skeletons are a classic Halloween front yard decoration and for good reason – there are so many fun ways you can use them!

Posable skeletons are popular these days and can be moved into a variety of different poses to suit your decor goals. I like the guy in the photo above, wearing a hat and helping to rake leaves!

If you don’t want to do a scary Halloween front yard, then consider using posable skeletons with fun props such as bathtubs, broomsticks, rocking chairs, etc.

Skeletons work well “stuck” in your bushes, trying to climb a tree or up the side of your house. With a little bit of creativity, you can really make a funny scene of your Halloween front yard!

This article on Lady Declutter had some fun front yard skeleton ideas you might want to try.

Archway for a Halloween Front Yard

Archways have become a popular Halloween front yard decor idea in recent years. You can use them in the following ways:

  • Frame a walkway
  • Create an entrance to a spooky area of the yard
  • Create an entrance to a Halloween party area
  • Create an entrance to a trick or treat area
  • Frame the entrance to your front porch or front door

You can buy premade Halloween arches, many of which are inflatable for easy storage. Or consider making your own using wood, foam board, paint and whatever other materials might be fun to use.

Some lighting around your arch will help bring it to life at night for trick or treaters.

Halloween Front Yard Ideas With Lights

Many of the Halloween front yard ideas I’ve mentioned so far really come alive at night with the right lighting effects. You’ve got several different options for Halloween front yard lighting including the following:

  • Orange, purple & green Halloween string lights
  • Halloween projection lights & lasers
  • Color changing spotlights and flood lights
  • Orange, purple, red, green & black light bulbs for your porch lights
  • Light up inflatable Halloween decorations.

Just adding one or two of these lighting options will really elevate the look of your Halloween front yard decorations at night.

Extra Tall Halloween Decor in a Front Yard

Have you seen the trend of extra tall and large Halloween props? It’s been a thing for a few years now, and I talked about it here on my 2024 Halloween trends article.

Basically, most Halloween props and animatronics are designed to feel “life sized” and are around 5ft to 7ft tall range. So any Halloween prop over 8ft is considered “extra large” or “extra tall”.

These extra tall Halloween figurines really make a statement on your front yard as many look quite staggering standing near your house!

If you’re looking to make your Halloween front yard decorations stand out from the crowd, consider using an extra tall or extra large prop.

Halloween Front Yard Pumpkin Patch, Jack-o-Lanterns

jack-o-lanterns in halloween front yard display

Pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns are a classic way to decorate for Halloween. Many people think to place them by the front door or on the steps leading up to the house.

But have you considered creating a pumpkin patch in your yard with lighted jack-o-lanterns? There’s something about a large grouping of pumpkins that is really impressive looking. Add in some creepy light effects and maybe a fog machine and you’ve got a really fun Halloween front yard decor idea!

If carving that many pumpkins sounds daunting, use foam pumpkins instead of real ones. Start with a few and add to your collection year after year. Here’s a fun story of a woman decorating her yard with hand carved foam pumpkins each year: Crazy pumpkin lady’ gets Lynbrook in the Halloween spirit with elaborate jack-o’-lantern display

Spiders & Webs in a Halloween Front Yard

Spiders work well for Halloween decor, so why not use them in Halloween front of the house ideas? You can find a wide variety of spider props on the market in all different sizes and colors.

A lot of people like using those “jumping” animatronic Halloween spiders as a way to scare guests.

Don’t forget about the spiderwebs. There’s lots of different kinds of cobwebs available on the market today that can really add to your Halloween front yard decor.

Extra large nets can cover a big corner of the lawn or hang from the front porch. Fake cobwebs spread over bushes, tree branches and Halloween gravestones make for great Halloween front lawn ideas.

Monster Figures in a Halloween Front Yard

What’s a Halloween front lawn if it doesn’t have a few monsters figurines? For the true Halloween lover, you can never have enough of these creepy props.

But don’t feel like you need to have a yard completely covered in Halloween animatronics to get a good effect. A few Halloween monsters tucked here and there can be all that you need for a great Halloween front yard setup.

If you’re creative and like DIY projects, consider making your own Halloween monster props. I’ve seen a ton of great ideas for homemade Halloween props on Pinterest.

You can use things like plastic piping, cheese cloth, fake hands & feet, masks, real clothing, etc. to create a good monster for your front yard.

Blow Ups & Inflatables for Halloween Front Yard Ideas

Love them or hate them, you’ve got to admit that blow up Halloween decorations are here to stay. Some may call them tacky, but I think with the right staging and lighting, Halloween inflatables can be a fun, easy way to decorate your yard for Halloween.

I like how in the photo above, the giant spider is paired with spider webs, jack-o-lanterns and a fog machine for a spooky autumn vibe on the front lawn.

Fall Decor For Halloween Front Yards

witch figurine, tall bog monster, pumpkins, gourds, mums in halloween front yard display

A lot of people have a hard time choosing between displaying Halloween or fall decor. If you can’t choose, why not display both? This NYC brownstone “front yard” makes the most of this idea with some scary Halloween props tucked in between lots of fall gourds, mums and leaf garland.

This is a cute way to decorate for both seasons at the same time. The purple witch’s cape paired with the purple mums helps everything feel cohesive instead of looking like a bunch of random decorations thrown together. Something to consider for you front yard this Halloween.
