When Should You Decorate a Candle?

How do you decorate a plain candle? Consider decorating candles for these holidays & events:

  • Christmas
  • Easter
  • Thanksgiving
  • Diwali
  • Fourth of July
  • Halloween
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Mother’s Day
  • Father’s Day
  • Weddings
  • Baptisms
  • Bridal showers
  • Baby showers
  • Birthdays

But don’t feel like you have to decorate a candle just for a holiday or special event. It can be fun to take a plain candle you have sitting around the house and give it a new look.

What Can You Use to Decorate a Candle?

Things to use to decorate candles at home:

  • dried flowers
  • tissue paper
  • fabric
  • beads
  • paper napkins
  • cinnamon sticks
  • sharpies
  • wax paper
  • henna
  • ribbons
  • stickers
  • glitter

This is just a short list of candle decorations. Think in terms of scrapbook supplies. If it can be used in a scrapbook, it can probably be used to decorate a candle.

Decorating Wax vs Fake or Flameless Candles

You can decorate wax candles with your favorite craft materials. But you’ll need to make sure that when the candle burns, the decorations do not catch fire or get destroyed by the dripping wax.

If you’re concerned about this, consider using flameless candles instead. Fake candles or LED candles come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and quality points.

How to Decorate a Candle with Ribbon

In this tutorial for how to decorate a candle with ribbon, I’m going to decorate some candles for Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day always seems to come quickly after Christmas. It can be hard to find the time to put up decorations.

But if you have some flameless candles around the house, you can quickly make a fun, homemade Valentine’s Day decoration.

You’ll need a few simple supplies:

  • flameless candles (wax candles work too!)
  • pink ribbon
  • pink scrapbook paper
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • tape or glue
  • printable heart template (optional)
  • heart stickers/decals/embellishments (optional)

I used 4″ diameter Liown flameless candles for this DIY craft tutorial. But you can use whatever brand you have around the house.

Style #1 – Basic Ribbons

Since I didn’t know much about how to decorate a candle with ribbon, I started with just a bit of pink glitter ribbon from a local craft store.

Just wrap the ribbon around the candle and secure on the back with tape.

This is a really simple, elegant look and is such an easy way to dress up flameless candles for Valentine’s Day decorations.

How do you attach things to candles?

Clear packing tape works well to attach things to candles. Also, it’s easy to remove after the holiday or special event. You can also glue the ribbon onto the candle if you want something more permanent.

If you’re wondering how to decorate candles for other holidays, this idea will work for Christmas, Easter, etc. Get creative with different ribbon colors and embellishments.

Style #2 – Layered Ribbons

How do you decorate a plain candle? In addition to the candle decoration with ribbons idea above, consider using a layered approach with the ribbon.

For instance, in this style I layered the ribbon in front of a strip of metallic rose gold scrapbook paper.

You’ll want to cut a strip of the scrapbook paper to go around the candle.

I found that the scrapbook paper just barely fit around my 4″ candles. There was a slight gap in the back but wasn’t too noticeable.

I measured a few inches of the scrapbook paper and made a line on the back of it with a ruler. I cut along this line to make a strip.

After that, I secured the ribbon and the paper onto the candle with tape.

You might want to hide the tape behind the ribbon and paper if your candles will be seen from behind. Such as when you have a table centerpiece for a dinner party.

Otherwise, if no one will see the back of your candle, you can be a little less particular about how the tape appears for your candle decoration with ribbons.

Style #3 – Other Decorations

Finally, I wanted to add a heart for Valentine’s Day to my flameless candle. I didn’t have any heart stickers or decals laying around but you could certainly use them if you wanted.

I found a simple printable heart template and used it to cut a heart from a different color of scrapbook paper.

You can use glue or tape to secure the hearts on the candle wrap.

In conclusion, these creative homemade candle wraps for Valentine’s Day are super simple and easy to make.

You can use these same techniques to decorate candles for just about any holiday or event. Ribbons, flowers, fabric, etc. can all be applied to a candle using glue or tape. Check out this Christmas version using red ribbon:
