Seasonal Decor Storage Ideas

Ever get excited to decorate for a holiday but find yourself running out of time? Before you know it, the holiday or season is almost over and you didn’t get a chance to show your decor.

Seasonally decorating helps keep our living spaces feeling fresh and alive. It’s gets boring to look at the same stuff all the time! Mother nature is constantly changing her “decor” throughout the year – why shouldn’t we do the same?

A clear storage box filled with assorted holiday decorations, including silver, white, and teal ornaments. The box has a label on top reading "Storage for Holiday Decorations" and the website "www.theglossynest.com".

As I’ve gotten more organized over the years, it doesn’t take me nearly as long to decorate for the different seasons and holidays.

I get the boxes out of storage, put up the decor and take it down quickly when it’s time. It’s simple to do and makes the house feel constantly refreshed.

If that’s a feeling you’d like to experience too, keep reading for some great seasonal decor storage ideas to get started!

How to Change Out Seasonal Decor

Overwhelmed by the thought of putting up and taking down decorations? Wondering how to declutter holiday decorations?

Keeping up with seasonal decor can seem like a daunting task. But if you follow a few simple steps each time, it becomes fairly easy to do.

Here’s a simple process to follow throughout the year as you change out & declutter seasonal decor:

  1. Take pictures of your decor so you remember what worked well.
  2. Take down the decorations and move them into a single room.
  3. Sort through the seasonal decor and discard any items you no longer want to keep. Donate or trash these items, since there’s no sense in storing them.
  4. Pack the items into storage boxes.
  5. Fill out inventory sheets of the storage boxes as you go. Jot down any items you want to buy for next year.
  6. Label the storage containers so you know the contents. Printable labels work well for this.
  7. Move the storage boxes into the storage areas.
  8. Get out any new decorations from storage.
  9. Clean your space.
  10. Setup the new decorations.
  11. Make a list of any new decor items you need to buy. Shop for the new decor as you have time.
  12. Relax and enjoy the new decor & a clean space!

How to Organize Seasonal Decorations

It’s important to spend some time organizing your seasonal decor. When seasonal decor is organized, you’ll know what you already have on hand and what you might need to go buy.

You’ll also be able to easily swap out decor as the seasons and holidays change. We’re all busy and no one wants to spend extra time trying to sort through their seasonal decor in the attic or garage every few months.

By keeping up with your holiday decor storage organization, you’ll easily be able to decorate your home throughout the year in as little time as possible.

Here’s how to organize seasonal decorations:

  1. By season or holiday. For decor that only gets used for a particular season or holiday (e.g. Easter, Halloween, Christmas), I like to store these items together in plastic bins, totes or the original box. This makes it very easy to get out & put away all the Halloween decorations for example.
  2. By type. For decor that can be used across multiple seasons & holidays, I find it’s easier to sort it by type. For example, storing all my candles together, or storing all of my solid color ribbon together works well.
  3. By color. You can also sort things by color. This works well if you have a lot of one type of decor. For example, if you have a bunch of ribbon, you can store it all together and sort it by blue ribbons, green ribbons, gold ribbons, etc. This really helps you think creatively when coming up with new seasonal decor looks each year.

Storage Containers for Seasonal Decor

What types of containers should you use for storing seasonal decor? Do you need special containers for storing holiday decorations?

No, not really. Pretty much any box, bin or bag will do as long as it is sturdy. However, if you want your decor to be easy to find, then you might want to buy bins that are the same size.

A lot of people like using clear bins so that they can see what is inside the box with a quick glance.

What is the best way to store holiday decorations? Personally, I’m a big fan of using the original box that the decor came in. This is especially true for delicate or oddly shaped items. The original box is the perfect shape for the item and should hold up well over time.

Whatever you use to store your holiday decor, don’t forget to label the storage containers & take an inventory of the box contents. This helps so much with no only taking down and putting up decorations, but also in figuring out what to buy.

Storage Bins & Bags for Seasonal Decorations

When in doubt, packing seasonal decorations into hard sided plastic storage bins, soft sided storage totes, or holiday decoration storage bags is a good solution. Bags and totes are light weight and easy to carry for bulky items.

Plastic totes are easy to stack and can hold a wide range of decor items. Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or newspaper and place them on the top.

You can find plastic storage bins in all different colors, shapes and sizes. For those that like a clean, organized space, consider buying all of your holiday decoration storage bins in the same color regardless of the season.

Alternatively, use different colored holiday storage containers to help identify which decorations are inside.

Ornament storage solutions don’t have to be used for just Christmas ornaments. If you have lots of little decor items (such as Easter eggs, vase fillers, etc.), consider using ornament storage to store them.

Here are some holiday decor storage ideas to use for small items and ornaments:

  • Ornament storage boxes
  • Under the bed ornament storage boxes
  • Tote bags or soft sided storage containers for non delicate ornaments
  • Shoe boxes
  • Small cardboard boxes

Wall Art Storage Ideas

Trying to figure out how to store seasonal wall art? Wall art can be tricky to store as it doesn’t often fit into storage containers. The same goes for mirrors and other large, flat decor items.

Here are a few ideas for storing seasonal wall art:

  • Lean it against an empty wall.
  • Slide it in between, behind or under storage shelving units.
  • Use an art storage rack.
  • Wrap it in bubble wrap and store it in art shipping boxes.
  • For unframed items, use archival photo storage boxes.

Make sure to protect your wall art before storing it. Use bubble wrap and cardboard to keep it secure and prevent damage.

For paintings that are sensitive to heat & moisture, make sure to store them in a cool, dark place to prevent the possibility of water or mold damage.

Large Outdoor Seasonal Decor Storage Ideas

How do you store large seasonal decorations? You’ve got several options with storing large outdoor holiday decorations:

  • Inside a garden shed
  • Covered under your deck
  • In an outdoor storage container or box
  • In your basement
  • In your garage
  • In a storage unit

While most large outdoor seasonal decorations are designed to to get wet, exposure to the elements will start to damage them. It’s ok to store these items outside, but you’ll want to keep them covered to protect them during the off season.

Can’t seem to find any place for them? It might be best to hold them in a storage unit instead of at your house. Use a truck, van or SUV to move them to and from the unit throughout the year.

Where to Store Seasonal Decorations

So where do you store seasonal items? Pretty much any storage space in your house or apartment can be used for storing seasonal decor. Attics, basements and garages are popular storage locations, but don’t forget about closets and under the bed storage as well. The most important thing is that your decorations stay safe and dry while in storage, regardless of where they are stored.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons to each of these storage areas for seasonal decor.

Seasonal Decor Storage in the Attic

Attics are a great place to store seasonal decorations throughout the year. There are a few considerations though with storing decorations in the attic:

  • Does it very hot in your attic? Some decorations might not do well under extreme heat.
  • Is your attic accessed via steps? Some decorations might be too heavy to move up and down from an attic with steps.

These considerations aside, an attic space can work well for seasonal decor. Even small crawl spaces can hold a surprising amount of decorations. Just make sure to keep things organized and neat. This makes it easy to find your decor throughout the year.

Seasonal Decor Storage in the Basement

Another seasonal decor storage idea is to use your basement to store holiday decorations. A big issue people often face with storing things in a basement, is keeping away mold and mildew build up.

Even if you use dehumidifiers, mold and mildew can still occur. Once the moisture gets into your decor, it can be really hard to get rid of.

If this is the situation with your basement, or if your area is prone to flooding, you might want to think twice about using your basement to store holiday decorations. But if your basement is dry and clean, it makes a great place for seasonal decoration storage.

Seasonal Decor Storage in the Garage

One of my favorite seasonal decor storage ideas is to store as much as you can in the garage. In many parts of the country, garages are on the same level as the first floor of a house. So it can be ideal to store heavier items such as your Christmas tree in a garage and not have to move them up or down steps.

Garages get good airflow due to the door constantly being opened and closed. Moisture issues aren’t always a problem in garages vs in a basement. If you don’t like to park your car in your garage, then you can use it for quite a bit of storage space instead.

Shelving or overhead storage racks in the garage work well to keep things organized and make the most use of the space. Handy with power tools? Consider making your own garage storage shelving units. Otherwise, look for ready made garage shelving options.

Seasonal Decor Storage in a Shed

Can you safely store holiday decorations in a shed? Yes, absolutely! A garden shed makes a great place to store large outdoor Christmas decorations such as outdoor reindeer figurines or Christmas inflatables. Other seasonal decor items such as large outdoor Halloween lawn figurines store well in a shed.

Just make sure your shed is protected from the elements. If there’s a chance your decor could get wet, it probably will at some point during the year. Use waterproof storage containers or limit a shed to outdoor decor items only.

Seasonal Decor Storage for Apartments

How do you store holiday decor in a small space or apartment? It can be a challenge to try and find storage room in small living spaces. But it can be done!

One thing to consider is that you’ll need less decorations in a small space than in a large house. So there is less to store anyway.

Here are some seasonal decoration storage ideas for an apartment or small space:

  • Under a bed
  • In a closet
  • Under the sink
  • In an extra kitchen cabinet
  • In nightstand, sideboard or dresser drawers
  • On hangers or hooks behind a door
  • On a bookcase (use nice looking storage containers)

If your small space is stuffed to the brim and out of storage room, it might be time for one of two things: a good clean out to get rid of some stuff or storing extra items in an off site storage unit.

Seasonal Decor Storage Around the House

Many people think closets and extra bedrooms are only for storing certain kinds of items like toiletries or extra towels. But you can use these spaces to store seasonal decor items too!

With some storage containers and a few shelves, you can get a storage space setup in your extra bedroom. One thing to keep in mind though is making sure it looks neat and organized.

Too much decor stored out in the open will feel cluttered and will be hard to clean. Make sure that you can close the closet door to hide decor storage. For shelves that are out in the open, use neat looking storage containers to keep things looking tidy.
