Basic Christmas Tree Themes

Did you know that there are 8 main Christmas decorating themes? It may seem like themed Christmas trees are just a random mix of colors and creative styles.

But in reality, any Christmas tree that looks well put together will have at least one general theme. When Christmas product designers start on a new collection, these are the 8 main themes for Christmas trees they use:

Because of this, when you go to shop for Christmas decorations in the store, you’ll see items from these main themes! Once you decide on a theme or two to use, it makes shopping that much more simple.

Now you don’t have to stick with decorations in just one Christmas tree theme. In fact, the most creative Christmas trees will often feature elements from two or more Christmas tree themes.

But it helps to get started by focusing on one Christmas tree theme and building out your tree decorations from there.

Let’s explore one of my favorite Christmas decorating themes: Elegant!

If you like glam home decor, then the Elegant Christmas tree theme might just be for you. Here are some features of this beautiful Christmas tree theme:

  • Detailed, ornate ornaments
  • Metallic elements such as ribbons & florals
  • Rich fabrics like velvets & brocades
  • Jewel tone colors
  • Any decorations that read as “classy”, “fancy”, “glam”, “exquisite” or “expensive looking”

In short, the Elegant Christmas tree theme looks rich and formal. Think old money houses like Biltmore, European castles, well decorated penthouse apartments in a big city, jewel boxes, Faberge eggs, etc. The more glitz and glam, the better with elegant Christmas tree decorating ideas.

But note, despite the glam, this is still an somewhat of an understated theme. Crazy colors and bold Christmas displays will lean more towards the Eclectic Christmas tree theme, instead of the Elegant Christmas tree theme.

Elegant Christmas Tree Styles

What Christmas tree styles work best for the Elegant Christmas tree theme? In my opinion, traditional, cone shaped, green Christmas trees look the best.

A tree decorated in the Elegant style will make a bold statement in your home. So, the trick is to find an artificial Christmas tree that will fill your space and look plush.

Traditional Christmas Trees

Flocked and frosted Christmas trees can also work well for this theme. The effect of fresh snow on a Christmas tree is a nice backdrop for glam ornaments.

Flocked Christmas trees have faux snow that covers the branches, giving it a look of a tree covered in freshly fallen snow. Frosted Christmas trees are the same, but with less faux snow. So they appear to have more of a “dusting” of snow than a flocked tree.

You can buy an artificial Christmas tree that is already flocked. Or you can buy special snow flock powder that can be used to flock a Christmas tree.

I would avoid trees of other colors such as pinks, purples, etc for elegant Christmas tree ideas. This will give off more of an eclectic vibe than we’re going for.

I would also avoid sparse, rustic style Christmas trees. These are more for a natural looking theme, which the Elegant Christmas Tree Theme is not.

What colors should you use for these Elegant Christmas tree decorating ideas? Here are some of the colors & shades that will work best for elegant Christmas tree ideas:

  • Metallics: bright or muted gold, silver, rose gold, copper, platinum, champagne
  • Jewel tones: red, green, burgundy, blue, purple, pink
  • Neutrals: white & beige

The trick with this theme is to stick with medium to darker colors (apart from neutrals or metallics). Too bright of a green for example will read more as the Eclectic theme. Think in terms of “royal” colors – blues, reds, purples, etc.

  • Emerald green + gold
  • Ruby red + gold
  • Burgundy + dark purple + gold
  • Purples + pinks + gold + rose gold

Just because this is an expensive looking Christmas tree theme, doesn’t mean that your decorations need to be pricey! There are good finds out there for all budget levels.

Don’t forget to shop for gently used items on sites like Poshmark, Mercari and eBay.

Personally, I find this helps narrow down my options and keeps me from buying too many random things that don’t really work well together in my Christmas decor.
