Halloween Garden Decor Ideas

Do you have a garden area in your yard that you want to decorate for Halloween? Maybe you don’t have much space for a fully decorated Halloween front yard but can add a few decorations here and there.

Skeletons For Halloween Garden Decor

skeletons sitting at table in garden for halloween

Skeletons are always fun to use for Halloween decor. But have you considered using them in your garden? Posable skeletons can be sitting on just about anything in your garden including chairs by a cafe table as shown in the photo above.

These flexible skeleton figures can be moved into all kinds of poses for a fun look. Other ways to use skeletons in your garden include:

  • Climbing up a tree or a fence
  • Lounging on the ground
  • Doing funny dance moves or gymnastics
  • Waving to neighbors and trick or treaters
  • “Stuck” in the bushes
  • Skeleton imagery on accessories such as garden flags & yard signs

Yard Signs for a Halloween Garden

Yard signs are a quick and easy way to decorate your garden for Halloween. You can find spooky and creepy versions warning about “entering at your own risk”. Or maybe you’re looking for something cuter like the “pumpkin patch” version shown in the photo above.

One of fun things about yard signs is that you can easily make your own. You’ll need some wood from a hardware store or craft store and something to hang the sign from. You can also find metal Halloween yard signs to use.

I like that yard signs will generally store flat against a wall in your storage space. So you can have quite a few of them without taking up too much room.

Halloween Garden Decor With String Lights

String lights are becoming more popular to use for Halloween and they can make a nice touch in a garden. Hang them from a tree, string them across a garden fence or drape them over bushes and shrubs.

Basically, anyway you would hang Christmas lights in your yard can also be used for hanging Halloween string lights. Orange string lights are popular for Halloween of course, but look for purple and green varieties as well as string lights with jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches, etc.

Jack-o-Lanterns In Halloween Gardens

One of my favorite Halloween garden decorations ideas is to use jack-o-lanterns. Are you planning on carving a jack-o-lantern this year for Halloween? A lot of people like to put their carved pumpkins near their front door or along their front steps.

But you can also display jack-o-lanterns in the garden as well. These look nice grouped together against a wall or hedge. Or consider giving your jack-o-lantern some height by having it sit on something like a tree stump, planter stand or outdoor table.

If you like the look of jack-o-lanterns but don’t have time to carve your own, you’ve got two options. One is to order a pre-carved jack-o-lantern from places like Etsy. There are lots of sellers on there that will carve a pumpkin for you however you would like.

Another option is to use plastic or resin jack-o-lantern figurines in your garden. These Halloween decorations can be used year after year so they might make a good option for those looking to save some time & money.

Halloween Garden Graveyard With Tombstones

You’ve probably seen at least one person in your neighborhood that does a full out graveyard in their front yard every year for Halloween. A big, fake Halloween cemetery works great if your front yard has the space for a fence and a bunch of tombstones.

But what if you don’t have that kind of space in your yard? You can still get away with placing Halloween gravestones throughout a garden.

There’s something about a faux tombstone placed in the dirt and leaves that gives a really creepy look. Cover it with fake cobwebs and add in a skeleton or two for a spooky Halloween garden scene. Small fences can be added to enhance the look.

What if your garden takes up too much space or your plants are too tall to see Halloween tombstones? Consider making your own grave markers that are slightly elevated. That way, they will stand out from the plants.

For some ideas on elevated grave markers, check out The Merry Cemetery in Romania or St. Peter’s Cemetery in Salzburg, Austria

Scarecrows In A Halloween Garden

Scarecrows might seem like a fall decor item, but you can use them for Halloween as well. Tucked into a garden, they make for a nice touch for the fall months.

You can have scarecrows sitting or standing in the garden. They can also be mounted onto a pole or hung from a tree, whatever way you think makes sense to secure them.

Now when it comes to scarecrows, you basically have two options. You can do cute and sweet looking scarecrows for a charming touch. These scarecrows won’t scare off your trick or treaters and might be more pleasant to look at everyday than scarier versions.

On the other hand, you can total creep out your neighbors with a scary scarecrow figurine. Some of the ones on the market are really creepy looking! For more information about using scary scarecrows, check out this article: 13 Super Scary Ways to Decorate Your House for Halloween

Finally with scarecrows, consider if you want to make your own or buy a premade one. We used to make scarecrows as kids using old clothes stuffed with hay.

This is fun to do, but can get a bit messy. For less mess, look for premade scarecrows with artificial filling.

Halloween Gardens Decor Ideas Using Hanging Decorations

One fun thing about decorating a garden for Halloween is that you have plenty of areas to hang decorations. Spooky ghost and phantom figurines can easily be hung from the lower branches of a tree.

Smaller Halloween figurines look cute hung from shrubs and brushes. Think of decorating your garden shrubbery similar to a Christmas tree, with Halloween “ornaments” placed here and there.

Cobwebs and string lights can also be used with hanging Halloween decorations in a garden to give it a spooky vibe, especially at night.

Halloween Garden Decor Ideas Using Vegetables

jack-o-lanterns, vegetables in garden for Halloween

Personally, I love growing fall harvest type vegetables such as Indian corn and gourds to use as decorations in the autumn months. If you grow your own garden, then you know that you can end up with a ton of extra veggies.

Why not use some of these vegetables as Halloween garden decorations?

In the photo above, purple onions and potatoes make a nice display for both fall and Halloween along with a carved jack-o-lantern, gourds and mums.

Tables For Halloween Garden Props

One of the things to consider when decorating your garden for Halloween is whether or not your decorations will be visible with all of the plants in your garden. Small decorations will get lost among the foliage and sometimes you just need a little bit of height.

In that case, consider using outdoor tables, plant stands or any other prop that might be used to elevate the Halloween decorations in your garden.

In the photo above, the jack-o-lanterns are set on a small table and thus are easily seen amongst all of the other greenery in the area.

Halloween Garden Decor Ideas Using Groundbreakers

Have you heard of “groundbreaker” decorations for Halloween? These are basically props that are designed to look like they are coming out of the ground.

Sometimes you’ll also see them called “gravebreakers” since it looks like something is emerging from a grave site. Spooky stuff!

These groundbreaker props are perfect for the garden as it appears they are digging up the dirt to escape.

You can also do a similar “crime scene” look where it looks like a something was buried in the garden dirt. Don’t forget to add leaves and cobwebs for even more Halloween vibes.

Halloween Garden With Moss Covered Decorations

Another one of my favorite Halloween garden ideas is to use real or faux moss. Moss covered rocks, walls and trees can look really lovely in a garden. But it can also have a creepy vibe when paired with Halloween decorations.

Think of moss covered graves in old cemeteries – haunting indeed! If you don’t have any moss in your garden, but want to replicate the look, consider purchasing fake moss at a craft store.

You’ll also be able to find some premade Halloween decorations that are covered with moss.

Halloween Decorations Hidden in Vegetation

One of the best things about Halloween decorations is that they are often surprising. Anything that is designed to cause guests and trick or treaters to jump in fright is sure to be a hit.

Consider adding some of these spooky touches to your Halloween garden this year. Scary masks buried in greenery, or Halloween props that jump out at people from behind the foliage can be fun to display.

You can also use dense foliage as a way to hold display Halloween props. Skeletons, tombstones, spiders, rats & black cats can all be used on top of shrubs for Halloween garden decor ideas.
