Vintage Halloween Decor Ideas

If you’re bored with all the modern Halloween decorations on the market these days, consider going a bit old school. Retro Halloween decorations are fun to collect and are becoming more mainstream.

But where do you find these Halloween decor gems and how do you use them to decorate for this spooky season? Keep scrolling to find out!

Shopping for Vintage Halloween Decorations

Before I talk about how to decorate with vintage Halloween decorations, let’s first go over where to find them.

I mentioned that retro Halloween decor is becoming more mainstream, so you’ll often see vintage style new decorations at retailers and online stores. For example, Michaels has featured retro Halloween collections in 2019 and 2022.

There are a few companies and designers (Johanna Parker, Bethany Lowe, Beistle, etc.) that are committed to keeping the vintage Halloween style alive and well. For new retro themed Halloween collectables, check out these shops:

  • Vintage Halloween
  • Christmas Traditions
  • Cuddle Decor
  • The Holiday Barn
  • The Jolly Christmas Shop
  • Amazon
  • Walmart

You can also keep an eye out for actual Halloween antiques at places like flea markets, thrift stores, antique malls, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Instagrammers, etc. Also consider checking out the following for vintage Halloween items:

  • Etsy
  • eBay
  • Mercari
  • Poshmark

Retro Halloween Collection Displays

Now that you have a good idea on where to find vintage style Halloween decorations, let’s go through some fun ways to display them. To start, you can’t go wrong with having your retro Halloween decor collection in a big display somewhere in your house.

This is a popular look and you’ll see people showing off their collections this way on social media.

An easy way to do this is to place your vintage Halloween decor on shelving or bookcases. It can be fun to change up the shelving displays year after year, as you collect more items.

Antique Halloween Decorations in Cabinets

Another take on using shelves to display a vintage Halloween decor collection is to use the shelves within a china cabinet or curio cabinet. The glass windows and doors make the collection feel “contained” and similar to a collection of “curiosities”.

If you don’t have enough decorations to fill a cabinet yet, consider just decorating a shelf or two as a focal point. Books, baskets, faux plants and other decorative items will help fill in the remaining space.

Retro Halloween Vignettes

Do you have a sideboard, coffee table, end table or any other flat space in your house that needs some decorations? One of my favorite vintage Halloween decor ideas is to use areas like this to display a Halloween decor vignette.

I love how in the photo above, fall leaves and pip berry stems are worked into the vignette to cover both the autumn and Halloween seasons.

Don’t feel as though you have to keep all of your Halloween decorations in a vintage style. It’s perfectly fine to mix and match retro Halloween decor pieces with more modern Halloween decorations.

In the photo above, modern black Halloween flameless candles and garland are paired with vintage Halloween black cats, jack-o-lantern and retro signs for a fun vignette.

Vintage Halloween Kitchen Decorations

Do you have a coffee bar area in your kitchen or another space where you can display a vintage Halloween decor collection? Kitchens and dining rooms are a great place to show off vintage Halloween dishes, mugs, serveware and tins.

In the photo above, I love how vintage Halloween candy bags were used as garland. You can add in other vintage accessories you might have on hand such as old scales, cake plates, dolls & more to complete the look.

Vintage Halloween Decorations With Paper Cutouts

If you’re having trouble finding antique Halloween decorations or maybe you are on a tight budget, consider decorating with paper cutouts. Halloween paper cutouts can really help fill out a space or fill in behind decor pieces.

You can find vintage Halloween paper cutouts in stores. Or consider making you own. There are lots of vintage Halloween printables you can download and turn into cute decorations. Check out Pinterest for some ideas.

Vintage Halloween Signs & Gallery Walls

Another one of my favorite vintage Halloween decor ideas is using signs. These are often similar to vintage Halloween paper cutouts but are more sturdy . Signs are a popular way to decorate for the holidays, with Halloween being no exception.

You can find vintage Halloween signs in stores but also consider making your own with basic supplies such as wood cutouts, vintage Halloween printables, paint & markers.

If you have enough retro Halloween signs, consider grouping them together in a gallery wall display. I love gallery walls as a fun way to decorate for Halloween. If you already have a gallery wall, consider swapping out the pictures for vintage Halloween wall decor instead.

Outdoor Vintage Halloween Decorations

Can you decorate the outside of your house with vintage Halloween decorations? Yes, absolutely! I love the antique jack-o-lantern in the photo above tucked in between real pumpkins. What a cute little vintage witch hat, too!

The one thing to consider with placing Halloween antiques outdoors is the weather. Some people would want to preserve their vintage Halloween collectables as long as possible, so keeping them away from the elements is a must.

Old plastic can fade over time too, which is why you will see vintage plastic jack-o-lanterns looking more yellow than orange. Use your best judgement when it comes to displaying your vintage Halloween items outside.

Retro Halloween Mantel Displays

Mantels are always a great place to decorate for the holidays and seasons. If you have a big retro Halloween decor collection, why not display it on your mantel similar to the photo shown above?

Some people might feel that the mantel in the photo above is a bit much, but in that case, pair back the decorations until your mantel feels decorated enough for you.

Are Halloween Christmas stockings a thing? I’m not sure, but I’m loving the vintage stockings hanging from the Halloween mantel in the photo above! If you’re handy with sewing, these would be a fun Halloween decoration to make.

Vintage Halloween Decorations With Lights

When you display your vintage Halloween decorations, don’t forget about the lighting. Placing small candles in jack-o-lanterns and other decorations is one way to get a spooky glow in your Halloween display.

You can also incorporate real wax candles or flameless candles into your vintage Halloween decor. Another good option is to use string lights or fairy lights throughout your decorations.

Antique Halloween Tablescapes

Are you throwing a party for Halloween? Or maybe you have a dining room table that you like to decorate for the holidays and seasons? If so, consider doing a vintage Halloween tablescape.

I love in the photo above antique Halloween jack-o-lanterns were paired with retro plates and party favors. Be sure to check out Beistle for lots of great retro Halloween plates, serveware and paper products.
